The fast paced twitchiness of the dance and the relentlessness of it, reminded me almost like someone being controlled, and that idea spun into that of a puppet.

“Marionette”
The heart inside my chest beats like a clock.
Tick. tick. Tick. tick.
This is clockwork, the way I move, the way I am forced to move
Like some sort of music-box ballerina.
Tick. tick. Tick. tick.
Step after step
Movement
My limbs are no longer mine.
My joints pulled on by invisible strings.
Tick. tick. Tick. tick.
Put on a show.
Smile, they are watching
Watching as it controls me.
Step and step again
Lift my arm
Spin me around.
It’s no longer a dance.
It’s a formula
Of moves and gestures.
Tick. tick. Tick. tick.
Weave the strings.
Bend the wood.
Until it’s over
And we
All
Fall
Down.

About
Larkin Boyd
Larkin Boyd is a sophomore at Harpeth Hall and a very curious person. She is the current caretaker of many (struggling) plants and is a co-founder of her school’s Creative Writing Club. In her spare time she likes to take walks, make tea, and create various crafts that most likely will never be finished. When not at home procrastinating homework by reading, writing, or drawing, she enjoys learning new instruments, playing video games, and making up new worlds.
Art Wire is an ongoing creative writing fellowship from OZ Arts and The Porch. Each performance season, a cohort of writers is selected via application to attend a variety of OZ Arts presentations and respond to each work through original writing that is personal, playful, and deeply engaged.

Throughout the season, original Art Wire writings will be added to this website, showcasing the inspiration and interpretations captured by this year's cohort.
